NGH
The National Guild of Hypnotists is the largest organization of its type in the world. Formed in 1951 and based in Merrimack, New Hampshire, it boasts over 10,000 active members in 56 countries. Its conventions draw leading professionals from around the world – many who have practices in hypnotism, psychiatry, psychology, medicine, dentistry, osteopathy, chiropractic and many other fields of the healing arts and counselling services.

The National Guild is held in such high regard for its ethical and professional activities that on 11th August Marlborough Mayor Nancy Stevens proclaimed that “National Guild of Hypnotists Day” would be celebrated in Marlborough. The Guild has also been recognised and honoured by the Massachusetts Senate and the House of Representatives.

Dr Dwight Damon, founder and president of the NGH, opened the convention and spoke of his vision for the future of hypnosis. His talk covered the growth of hypnosis as a distinct and separate profession. He also brought convention attendees up to date with what the NGH union has achieved to protect and promote the profession.

Seminar presenters were from all sections of the US, Canada, Europe and Asia, and covered subjects such as client services, geriatrics, hypno-oncology, children and learning enhancement, smoking and weight control, stress management, professional networking, practice development, legal updates and many other topics.

All convention attendees were presented with a 556 page book ‘Bridge to Excellence’. The book was an adjunct to the hundreds of seminars presented at the convention as it is impossible to attend all the workshops and seminars: with such a wide variety of subjects presented, attendees needed to choose subjects that they particularly have an interest in.

I attended two of Roy Hunter’s seminars and Roy and I got together after the seminars and discussed his recent visit to Australia. He said how much he enjoyed the hospitality of the members of the CCH when he was in Melbourne. He intends to return to Australia in 2008.

I have a great interest in the use of hypnosis as a complement to medical treatment and so I endeavoured to attend every workshop related to pain and healing. Some of the workshops I attended were ‘Hypnosis before, during and after surgery’ with Clair Tatro, ‘Medical Hypnosis’ with Seth-Deborah Roth, ‘Obesity and Diabetes in Children’ with Laura Olsen, ‘Brain Research’ with Susan Fox, ‘Paediatric Hypnosis’ with Ernest Telkemeyer and ‘How to Reverse Cancer’ with Jennifer and Dennis Chong. Last year I completed Ron Eslingers three day workshop ‘Pain, the 5th Vital Sign’. I attended another of his shorter workshops this year. Ron provided statistics regarding pain and how we as hypnotists can help suffers to obtain relief in so many ways – better sleep, decreased stress, decreased pain, better quality of live, more control, self esteem and confidence. The workshop also covered physical symptoms of pain, the pain cycle and hypnosis techniques for working with pain.

Every year I return from the convention inspired and humbled by the work being undertaken by fellow hypnotists working to further the professionalism and recognition of hypnosis.  It is absolutely awesome to spend time talking with people who have been practicing hypnosis for over 65 years and have been members of the NGH for 56 years. I asked different ones what they believed has nurtured and developed hypnosis through their lifetime. Each one had different, yet similar stories. However, one theme stood out – that of sharing and co-operation.
