Daryl Wilkinson
I take great pride in writing this article about Daryl Wilkinson because Daryl is one of the most respected practising Clinical Hypnotherapists in Australia. I first met Daryl over the internet, at an International Hypnotherapy discussion group, when I was still in living in Europe. The first thing that got my attention was his broad knowledge of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy. Have you ever wondered what a walking Hypnotherapy Library would look like?

Look at the photo to the left.

When I got to read more of Daryl’s postings, I realised that he just LOVES our profession with passion. He also loves gadgets and tries to acquire the latest, to increase expectation and suggestibility with his clients.

Another quality that I admire is his intricate sense of humour. Whether through good or bad times, his amazing sense of humour can help anyone understand that the practice of Hypnotherapy can be fun too. Warning: it can be very contagious I have been having loads of FUN at my practice ever since I met Daryl.
When he found out that I was on my way to Australia, Daryl immediately offered his help. His generosity and kindness meant the whole world to me as he delivered what he promised and took me under his wing not only during my early days in Australia but even today. Thanks to him I was introduced to a world of experienced Hypnotherapists belonging to various prestigious Associations.

Daryl is a trained counsellor and hypnotherapist and a registered member of the Australian Clinical Hypnotherapists Association and a foundation member of the Council of Clinical Hypnotherapists - Australia. Daryl’s connection with hypnosis began much earlier than that, however: over forty years ago, as a teenager, after all else had failed, he was cured of asthma by a Hypnotherapist. As a result, he has always held an unshakeable belief in the extraordinary power of the mind, positive thought and the mind-body connection.

Daryl’s initial training was as an actor, graduating from Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in the mid 1960's. In recent years he has had a renewed interest in performing (after an absence of almost thirty years) and has been involved in a few interesting projects and some work as a voice over artist for TV and radio. It was while at NIDA Daryl realised that acting, like hypnosis, requires "focused concentration and the bypassing of the critical mind". Daryl went on to teach acting and drama for many years using "hypnotic" techniques.

In 1996 Daryl’s wife was diagnosed with cancer and in an attempt to find a cure, Daryl and his wife went to a retreat run by Ian Gawler. During that retreat, they were exposed to ‘’Guided Meditation’’ (hypnosis by another name!). Daryl then started to work with his wife using what he remembered from his own experience of hypnosis and with the knowledge he had gathered from his experience using hypnosis with actors. Daryl then decided to study Hypnotherapy to find out if he was "doing it right". A few months later Daryl’s wife passed away. This changed his life as he then decided to dedicate the rest of his life to helping people using hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

For over thirty years, Daryl held lecturing positions in several tertiary institutions, but he now devotes his time to his very successful private practice. I was privileged to recently visit Daryl’s beautiful new practice in North Carlton (a suburb he lived in for 20 years with his wife and children before moving to the Bayside area for the next 18 years). Daryl is excited about the move back "home" to Carlton.

His client base embraces people from all walks of life with a wide variety of presenting conditions, but also includes many high profile performers, writers and artists, reflecting his commitment to, and understanding of, the needs of the arts community. Daryl considers himself to be a coach rather than a healer. He says his weekly client load usually would consist of 25% smokers, 25% HypnoBirthing clients and the rest, EVERYTHING else with many who have performance anxiety issues.

Thank you Daryl for your contribution, not only to this immensely rewarding profession of Hypnotherapy but also for brightening so many hearts with your kindness, generosity, warmth and endless knowledge.
