Page 1 of 2 Alan Stubenrauch When I was asked to interview and write this newsletter article about the CCH President I knew this would not be such an easy task as Alan has a very busy schedule with clients and his various professional association duties, business and family commitments taking up most of his time. After some prodding by the newsletter editor, Alan and I finally matched diaries and we got together in his comfortable clinic which has all the trappings of a health shop, science laboratory, administrative office, work area and Hypnotherapist’s consulting rooms. I was struck by the irony of being in an environment so conducive to relaxation with this talented fellow who so rarely stops to relax himself.
Initially I thought that I might be able to short circuit this interview and writing chore by perhaps adapting a resumé or curriculum vitae that Alan may have written. Alas I was out of luck: Alan has been a Clinical Hypnotherapist for almost 25 years and has never needed to advertise. After throwing off the green-eyed monster of jealousy, I asked Alan to tell me what he would say if he had to write a short summary about himself and he suggested that such a paragraph might read as follows: “Alan Stubenrauch is an internationally known counsellor, clinical hypnotherapist and naturopath. For almost 25 years, he has run a successful Melbourne practice, based solely on client referral. Alan has a client listing in excess of five thousand people, from right across Australia as well as eighteen other countries. Alan’s practice is genuinely holistic, addressing the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those seeking help. Alan is the Federal Vice-President and Secretary of the Complementary Medicine Association and the President of the Council of Clinical Hypnotherapists Australia. Alan’s skills and qualifications include Clinical Hypnotherapy, Naturopathy, Kinesiology, Myorthotics and Therapeutic Massage.” Alan is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Hypnotic Science and a Fellow of the Australian Complimentary Medicine Association. He was the recipient of the first ever Scholarship from the Australian Academy of Hypnotic Science where he completed his Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy; Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis and Post Graduate Diploma in Psychotherapy.
Alan has developed numerous training units or modules of study in hypnotherapy; regularly lectured and presented at community organisations and academic institutions on subjects dealing with “The Mind and Spirituality” and has presented lectures on “The Mind and Telepathy” at Monash University where he held the position of “Honorary Consulting Hypnotherapist”.
Alan’s main areas of specialisation are in relationship counselling and transpersonal hypnotherapy with an interest in the more esoteric issues associated with client needs. His holistic approach has proved especially effective in treating substance abuse. He utilizes his naturopathy skills in conjunction with hypnotherapy and psychotherapy to bring about lasting positive outcomes for his clients.
His expertise and experience as a therapist are but part of the story though, a later chapter. Alan grew up in Burwood, Melbourne and remembers well being a member of the school Cadets. He told me stories about young 14 year old kids carrying their .303 rifles to and from school on trams and trains and slung over their backs when riding their bicycles to school. What a different world we are in today. Alan matriculated (no mean feat in those times as most students left school at intermediate and leaving level, years 10 and 11 today). He studied Civil Engineering at RMIT although his heart was in other areas. In those days he was more interested in photography, writing, journalism, graphic design, illustration and fine art.
